Ubuntu 20.10 Software Updater has stopped working, other strange problems
by ElvisGump from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5CX0J)
Tuesday night the Software Updater did it's usual thing of alerting me there were updates to download and like forever I just said yes. I think I saw like Ubuntu Base something or other and really didn't pay it much attention. It did it's thing and advised Restart Now to complete updates which I did and went to bed.
Next day and ever since nothing works right. Chrome which had been snappy and quick has ground to a halt, sometimes pages will load very slowly taking like five minutes or more to complete or not at all. And the Software Updater can't connect to repositories, please check internet connection.
On the other hand Firefox loads like a champ like there's nothing wrong. I seldom used it lately but it functions normally. My internet connection is fine for other devices, I've had gig speed fiber for a few months now after more than a decade of DSL and it's been a dream.
I checked to see if there was something like a "restore point" function like Windows has and find no clear answer. I tried a few things like checking for updates via terminal and it reports nothing needing upgrading though I'm not sure I'm doing that right. I used to get a daily pestering from Software Updater that there were new updates.
Whatever the last update was it seems to have broken a few things and I don't know how to even know what was upgraded in that last update.
Any suggestions?
