Bills fans donate over $450K to Lamar Jackson charity
Bills fans continue to show their support to quarterback Lamar Jackson after he suffered a concussion in the Baltimore Ravens' divisional-round loss to Buffalo.
Bills Mafia started donating to one of Jackson's favorite charities, Blessings in a Backpack, following Saturday's game. As of Wednesday, 16,450 individual donations totaling more than $458,000 were made to the Louisville-based organization, according to Yahoo Sports' Dan Wetzel.
Nikki Grizzle, chief marketing officer for Blessings in a Backpack, told Wetzel she learned about the charitable movement Sunday morning when the man monitoring the organization's website sent out a mass text to staff.
"We get a notification every time someone donates," Grizzle said. "And when there are suddenly 400 donations on a Sunday morning in the middle of January, he said, 'Did anybody know this was happening and forget to tell me?'
"By the time I looked, the 400 was up to 1,500."
Grizzle noted that Jackson is "amazed" by the gesture. He released a statement Wednesday through Blessings in a Backpack thanking Bills fans for their generosity.
"I would like to thank all of the Buffalo Bills Mafia fans for your generous donations and contributions," Jackson said. "I'm extremely grateful that you all communed together and donated to Blessings in a Backpack in my name. Your acts of kindness and generosity have not gone unnoticed, and it is greatly appreciated."
