The Pittsburgh Steelers signed former Washington Football Team quarterback Dwayne Haskins to a futures contract, the team announced Thursday.

Haskins and Steelers coaches met Thursday with the expectation that a deal would follow, sources told Albert Breer of The MMQB. The new contract ties him to the Steelers throughout the offseason and gives him a chance to crack the roster in training camp.

Washington released Haskins, the 15th overall pick in 2019, before the end of the regular season following several off-field incidents that raised questions about his maturity. On the field, Haskins didn't look like the phenom who dominated at Ohio State in 2018 en route to a Heisman Trophy nomination.

The Steelers face long-term uncertainty at quarterback, with 38-year-old Ben Roethlisberger showing signs of deterioration and approaching retirement.

In 16 career outings for Washington, Haskins threw for 2,804 yards with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while completing 60.1% of his pass attempts.
