network printer -- screwy response to PING

I have a network printer using its own built-in wifi. I did a manual configuration to set IP, MASK, and DNS.

I get this behavior:
Code:prompt$ ping xx.xx.2.90

PING xx.xx.2.90 (xx.xx.2.90) 56(84) bytes of data.
From xx.xx.2.89 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable
From xx.xx.2.89 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
From xx.xx.2.89 icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable
^C
--- xx.xx.2.90 ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 0 received, +3 errors, 100% packet loss, time 4088ms
pipe 4NOTICE that I asked for ...2.90 and I got reports about ...2.89. I get the same behavior for another network printer but the report has a completely different wrong number.

I've tried restarting both the printer and my laptop.
I've tried re-configuring the printer. I've restarted the wifi access point and router.

Follow-up:
After some additional pawing around I get this. Say, WHAT?
Code:prompt$ traceroute xx.xx.2.90

traceroute to xx.xx.2.90 (xx.xx.2.90), 64 hops max
1 * xx.xx.2.89 76.998ms !H 0.008ms !HNOTICE -- Again, I asked for ...2.90 and I got ...2.89
Same printer. Same workstation. Same LAN.

I'm stumped,
