Ubuntu wont let me leave

I am using Lubuntu.When I try to shut down the PC Ubuntu wont let me.
I tried shutdown and I tried Logout and shutdown but each time I am asked if I want to leave and lose any unsaved work.I select Yes,then I get a screen where I select the user ( which is me ) and my password ( as I am the only one using this PC I dont have a password )Then I go back to the Lubuntu desktop and start all over again.I am in an endless loop.To shut down the PC I had to unplug the battery and disconnect the power.
NB As above,when I am trying to shut down.Even the Power Off button does not work.
