How to activate new USB drive ? (Linux / Ubuntu)

After a new USB drive is plugged in I can
format it , assign label in Gparted
I cannot copy to it - have no permission
I cannot change the permission - I am not the owner
What is the easiest way to change the whole drive ownership ?
chown ???
From some ancient doc - "plugging USB drive should automatically mount it "
True or false?
If false - same as above - what is the easy or just correct way to mount-it?
