Changing to a newer laptop - hd should work w/o problems?

My old (2011) Thinkpad is giving me problems and I have found a replacement.
Enter my newer (2011) (newer to me anyway) HP 85760p. Processor specs are comparable since they both have 1st gen i7 processors.
My question is - Has anyone here had luck just moving their hard drive over and the OS runs?
I have a backup and can do a clean install and then apply the backup but am curious if maybe moving the hard drive will work
