A fire at a home in east Hamilton Friday morning caused more than $450,000 in damages.

No one was hurt in the fire at 117 Crosthwaite Ave. S., a residential street east of Kenilworth Avenue South, between King and Main streets.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been called to help determine the cause and origin of the blaze.

Firefighters were called to the home around 6:30 a.m. Jan. 29 and found smoke billowing from the roof of the two-storey home, the Hamilton Fire Department said.

Inside the home, firefighters found zero visibility and high heat. There was a well-involved fire" in the basement, with flames extending through the walls to the first and second floors.

No one was inside the home.

Fire crews found the floor was structurally compromised," so they with withdrew, the fire department said. The main part of the fire was quickly put out, but it took some time to extinguish all of the fire that had spread throughout the house.

Firefighters were expected to be on scene most of Friday morning.
