Just Installed Slack Live and WOW!
by BobNutfield from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5DRJ3)
Hello Everyone
It's been a long time since I posted to this forum. I've been completely out of the Slackware loop for many years (other things going on in my life.) I read a while back that a live version of Slack was available, but have not had the time to investigate it. I'm retired now as of last November so I thought it was about time to catch up. My last install of Slack for full time use was Slackware 12. My goodness has it come a long way!!
I've never been very tech savvy, but the good people in this forum always looked past my stupid questions and made me fall in love with Slackware in 2006. I remember my first Slackware install and the folks here walked me through it. Eventually I got enough knowledge to get along on my own (mostly.) Slackware live is amazing! I'm doing this post on an 11 year old Dell laptop and just like always Slack runs like it's a brand new computer. I love it!
I formatted an old 40GB laptop drive that I had lying around and installed it to that. No hiccups at all, it recognized and loaded every piece of hardware on the laptop with no tweaking. It's running from a USB cradle. To say that I'm pleased is an understatement.
Thank you so much to all who contributed to this,
I have only two questions:
1. Can this be used as a consistent system, meaning will it save all my work and settings on the drive? Or, like a live CD, will everything be lost when I shut down? If so, can it be permanently install on this drive with it's own boot loader? I'm happy to continue as user "live" if need be.
2. Can additional software be downloaded and installed on this drive as though it were a full install?
I look forward to perusing the forum again! It's so good to see the names of people from years ago are still here.
Best regards
Bob
