Hamilton police are investigating after a pickup truck went through the ice near the Bayfront Park boat launch late Friday night.

Acting staff Sgt. Kerry Strabac said officers were called to the park around 10:30 p.m. after receiving a number of reports of a truck having gone through the ice.

Photos from the scene show the silver-coloured truck submerged in the ice several hundred feet out from the boat launch.

Nearly the entire truck was under water, with the exception of a portion of the cab. Some of the items in the truck's bed had floated to the surface.

Hamilton paramedic service superintendent Dave Thompson said when paramedics made contact with the 32-year-old male driver, he was out of the water and on shore.

The man was cold but not injured and was warmed up" by paramedics on scene. He refused to be taken to hospital, he added.

Strabac said the male driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and he was arrested by police for impaired driving.

The marine unit is still investigating the incident as of Saturday morning and the truck was still in the water as of 9:30 a.m., said Strabac.

Police could not provide a timeline for the vehicle's removal.

More to come.
