Report: Packers plan to hire Joe Barry as DC
The Green Bay Packers have found a replacement for Mike Pettine.
The Packers plan to hire Joe Barry as their new defensive coordinator, reports ESPN's Rob Demovsky.
Barry spent the previous four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams as their assistant head coach and linebackers coach. He had agreed to join the Los Angeles Chargers as their defensive passing game coordinator and linebackers coach a few weeks ago.
The 50-year-old was part of the coaching staff that orchestrated Brandon Staley's top-ranked defense with the Rams last season. Staley recently moved on from the Rams' defensive coordinator role to become head coach of the Chargers.
Green Bay didn't renew Pettine's contract this offseason, ending the defensive coordinator's three-campaign stint with the team.
The Packers ranked ninth in total defense (334 yards per game) and 13th in scoring (23.1 points per contest) in 2020.
Green Bay has been eliminated in the NFC title game in two straight seasons. The club allowed 285 rushing yards during a loss to the San Francisco 49ers last January, and it surrendered 31 points to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season.
