Alex Smith claims NFL Comeback Player of the Year award
Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith was named the NFL's 2020 Comeback Player of the Year on Saturday.
After missing the entire 2019 season due to a broken leg, Smith posted a 5-1 record as a starter in 2020, helping Washington reach the playoffs for the first time since the 2015 campaign.
The 36-year-old broke his leg during a game against the Houston Texans in November 2018 and then battled a career-threatening infection in his surgically-repaired right leg.
The three-time Pro Bowler completed 66.7% of his pass attempts for 1,582 yards and six touchdowns against eight interceptions through eight appearances this season.
Smith also battled a calf injury in 2020, which sidelined him for multiple games, including Washington's wild-card matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
