A Hamilton man is in critical condition after an assault late Wednesday night in central Hamilton.

In a press release Thursday, police said at around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, officers responded to a disturbance in the area of 646 Main St. E., just east of Burris Street.

When officers arrived, they found a 30-year-old Hamilton man suffering from injuries consistent with stab wounds. The victim was transported to hospital and remains in critical condition, said police.

The major crime unit has taken over the investigation and police are currently holding the scene.

Residents can expect a police presence in the area for a majority of Thursday. Police have also closed three lanes of Main Street East at Burris Street as they investigate.

An update is expected later in the day.
