The Houston Texans are releasing star pass-rusher J.J. Watt following his request.

Watt approached the organization and both sides agreed to mutually part ways.

"The connection I have with the people of Houston is special, and I will never take that for granted because I know how rare it is. I just want you to know that I love you and I appreciate you. I want to thank the McNair family for drafting me and giving me my first opportunity in the NFL. Thank you, Houston," Watt said.

The veteran pass-rusher has played his entire 10-year career with the Texans after being selected in the first round (11th overall) of the 2011 draft. During his time in Houston, Watt has been named NFL Defensive Player of the Year on three occasions while also earning five Pro Bowl nods and recording 101 career sacks.

Watt's contributions to the Texans were felt both on and off the field. He leaves as the franchise's all-time sacks leader and was named Walter Payton Man of the Year for his help in the community following Hurricane Harvey.

"Change is never easy, especially when it involves the ones you love. J.J.'s impact on not only our organization, but the entire Houston community, is unlike any player in our franchise's history," Texans chairman Cal McNair said.

"I told J.J. earlier this week that we will forever consider him a Texan. We take solace in knowing that this is not a goodbye but a 'see you soon.'"

The Texans will save $17.5 million by cutting ties with the 31-year-old pass-rusher, per Spotrac.

Watt's departure is the latest development in Houston after quarterback Deshaun Watson reportedly asked for a trade earlier this offseason.
