Troubles with NetworkManager.

I did another fresh installation this morning. The usual, i.e., nothing unusual took place during the installation or setup.
After the dust settled and I started X as user, the NetworkManager applet didn't show the hardwired (eth0) internet connection.
I logged out and, as root, started X and the applet did show the eth0 connection.
I've been searching the 'Net looking for a solution, but haven't found one that addresses such a situation.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
