Grub Customizer ?

My system is gradually falling apart...
The last "gotcha" - I cannot select grub menu - upper and lower arrows on keyboard do nothing.
During research I found "Grub Customizer" - not sure how long it has been around, BUT, it won't select grub menu either.
To make things worst - I cannot instruct EFI setup (hardware) to go to the "Boot menu".
Looks as my option is to remove ALL HDD and start the system with ISO on USB stick - always worked before.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
PS I am still struggling with Ubuntu - if it makes a difference.
