How to copy old home directory after update for 18.1 to 20.1 mint
by BernardSmith from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5EFFS)
Hi All,
I have recently upgraded my laptop (which was dual boot windows & Mint 18.1) to Mint 20.1.
I decided to delete the Windows partition as I had not booted into Windows for 3 years !
I am left with a successful Linux mint 20.1 working system , however my new Home directory does not contain any of my documents.
I can still see & access my old Home directory on the 91gb partition .
I can still boot into the 18.1 Mint from grub.
Before upgrading I installed Timeshift and saved to an external usb 2tb drive.
Now my question :-
Can I copy the old Home directory including hidden files to the new directory ?
Is this desirable or would it cause problems ?
Can restore the home directory only with Timeshift , or would it be better to use the cp command in terminal ?
Please see screen shots of gparted & file structures.
If you look at my partition structure , I think I intended in past installations to have the Home directory on its own partition, howver i am now confused.
Thanks for in advance for your guidance -
