Help needed, folders but not contents of folders are not backed up to usb

Greeting all. Every time i try to copy a folder to a USB drive to use as a back up in case of a hdd failure it copies the folder but not the contents of the folder.
Example i go to files > Home then if i click the folder "Desktop" everything is their but after i copy to the USB dive then plug in again the folder is their but not the contents.
Right after i copy everything is in the folder but not after re-connecting to the PC.
I have experienced this in both Windows and Linux in the past as well so it is nothing new.
I used "Lucky Backup" and experienced the same thing.
The odd thing is some other things do copy normally like my video folder, the videos copy over no problem except for the occasional error copying something.
This affects all folders.
Copying also took quite a while so i know items were copying over, a image of the folders is attached.
