PHP not working at all

I have checked other threads but they seem to have issues with integration with MySQL. I haven't even got that far.
PHP (only) is installed, but for the life of me I can't get it to return data on a phpinfo() call.
The only thing I have changed in the php.ini file is the doc root is now set to /var/www as I want to run virtual hosts later. Any help/info gratefully received.
it's PHP 7.4.3 (cli) (built: Oct 6 2020 15:47:56) ( NTS )
sat on a server running Ubuntu 20.04 and apache/2.4.41 (Ubuntu)
