Debian Buster Mate trash applet doesn't work

I recently installed Buster on my machine to replace the Jessie I had been using. There is no trash icon on my desktop. I was able to add a trash applet to the top panel, but it doesn't work. When clicked, a window "flashes" on the screen, but that's all. Using the cli version does not put me in a happy place. Does the Mate Trash applet need special care and feeding to get it to work?

NOTE: I have been using Debian since Sarge.
