How to have linux play nice with Canon LiDE 700f

I'm not having much luck getting Linux (Mint in this case) to play nice with my Canon LiDE 700F scanner.
Every attempt results in the first page scan attempt ending with "Error during device I/O"
Whether the page actually appears is hit and miss. I need to reboot the software for the next scan.
Canon don't seem to have a specific driver for Linux.
Short of using Windows, which I am currently, is there a solution?
