Bucs tag Godwin, reportedly begin extension talks with Barrett
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have brought back Chris Godwin. Now, they're trying to retain Shaquil Barrett.
The Buccaneers franchise tagged Godwin, the team announced Tuesday. Additionally, Tampa Bay has begun discussing a long-term extension with impending free agent Barrett, according to Albert Breer of The MMQB.
The Buccaneers heavily relied on Barrett and Godwin during their Super Bowl run. Barrett recorded eight regular-season sacks, plus an additional four during the postseason. Godwin accumulated 232 receiving yards in the playoffs.
Godwin's franchise-tag designation will ensure he remains in Tampa for at least the 2021 season. The team will have until July 15 to reach a long-term agreement with the receiver.
Retaining Godwin was a top priority for the reigning Super Bowl champions. Head coach Bruce Arians and Godwin both expressed interest in extending their partnership. However, the wideout has shared his desire for landing a lucrative extension, stating last month, "I want to be in Tampa, but I want to get paid, too."
The 25-year-old has been a vital part of the club's receiving core. Godwin's recorded at least 800 receiving yards in each of the last three seasons, including a career-best 1,333-yard campaign in 2019.
Other Buccaneers players scheduled to hit free agency include Lavonte David, Rob Gronkowski, and Antonio Brown, among others.
