Lions' Golladay set to hit free agency after avoiding tag
The Detroit Lions informed wide receiver Kenny Golladay on Tuesday that he won't be franchise tagged before the deadline.
Golladay will thus hit the open market, where he'll likely be one of the most sought-after names.
The 27-year-old was reportedly a strong candidate to receive the tag despite missing most of the 2020 campaign due to injury. He had 20 catches for 338 yards and two touchdowns in five games before suffering a hip ailment.
Golladay produced back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns prior to last season and led the NFL in receiving touchdowns in 2019.
It was expected the Lions would tag Golladay to ensure new quarterback Jared Goff had a No. 1 target in his first season in Detroit. Marvin Jones and Danny Amendola, who led the Lions in receiving yards in 2020, are also free agents.
Detroit officially signed veteran wideout Tyrell Williams on Tuesday following his release from the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Lions also didn't use the one-year tender to retain defensive end Romeo Okwara. Okwara led the team with a career-high 10 sacks in his third season in Detroit.
