Unable to Install Ubuntu to VirtualBox in BIOS (Legacy) mode (forces UEFI?)

Hello, I am in a Linux class in college right now. I am trying to do my final project which involves installing an Ubuntu VM. I have tried using Hyper-V and VirtualBox and getting the same error involving a missing EFI partition.

We are instructed to use a 600 mb /boot partition, as well as a 1000mb swap partition and the rest of our 50gb as the / (root) partition. I create these three partitions and click "Install Now". It keeps giving me an error about a missing EFI partition. I have made roughly a dozen VMs before, and never had any issues. For some reason, it keeps making me create an EFI partition. I looked through the web for hours at this point and it seems as if Ubuntu is trying to install in UEFI mode instead of Legacy (BIOS) mode. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to boot the installer into this mode. I attach the iso file I downloaded directly from Ubuntu website to my virtual optical drive, when I start the VM it just gives me the options "Ubuntu", "Ubuntu (safe graphics)", "OEM Install (for manufacturers)", and "Test memory". I do not see any options to pick UEFI or non-UEFI install modes. This has been very infuriating. I consulted with my classmate who has also installed several of these VMs and he is running into the same issue.

More background, another classmate ran into no problems, she had no idea what she was doing, but sent a screenshot of her partitions and it said "sda1 /boot" "sda5 swap" "sda6 /" while my friend and I's keep saying "sda1 /boot" "sda2 swap" and "sda3 /". I wonder if this has something to do with it.

I have ensured that EFI mode is UNCHECKED in the Virtualbox settings. I have messed with the sizes for swap and /boot. I have made swap and / logical partitions instead of the default. I feel like I have tried everything. Any guidance is surely appreciated. What I don't get is why my previous VM installs never required an EFI partition but suddenly it does (as well as for my friend who is equally infuriated). I am pretty much a Linux noob so keep that in mind.
