COVID-19 in Hamilton: Cases found at Mohawk College, two Fortinos grocery stores and within Hamilton police

Cases of COVID-19 have been reported at Mohawk College, two Fortinos grocery store locations in Hamilton and within the Hamilton Police Service.

In a release Tuesday, Mohawk College said they have been notified of two cases, both involving students, at their Fennell Campus. The cases are not connected," according to the college.

The first student last attended class on March 10, while the second was last in school on March 11. Mohawk said both students followed all entry and safety protocols" while on campus.

The college said the students have been instructed to self-isolate and that the student wellness centre has contacted all impacted students and employees to notify them that (Hamilton) public health will be following up with them directly."

In a tweet Tuesday, Hamilton police said an officer working in support services had tested positive for the virus. The officer was last at work March 11 and all close contacts" have been notified.

Loblaw was notified Sunday that a staff member at the Fortinos at 21 Upper Centennial Pkwy. S. in Stoney Creek tested positive on a presumptive test for COVID-19," according to a listing on their COVID-19 case tracker.

The last day the employee worked was March 10.

The company was also notified Sunday of an employee case at the Fortinos located at 54 Wilson St. W. in Ancaster. According to Loblaw, the worker was last in the store on March 11.

The new cases follow an employee at the Dundurn Fortinos testing positive for COVID-19 on March 12. They were last in the store on March 3.

When a worker tests positive, Loblaw said they work closely with public health and follow their guidance to ensure proper notification of close contacts and required cleaning and sanitization in our stores."

It's unclear how many staff members were affected by the cases or if any were recommended to self-isolate as a precaution. The database doesn't specify which part of the store the employees worked in.
