GNOME 3.36 is unusably stuttery, laggy for me
by kevin_ from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5FFPX)
Gnome shell often makes my CPU usage jump to 90-100%, making the DE very laggy. I have to restart my laptop each time to suppress it. I use it for 6-8 hours a day, and it happens in seemingly random times. Sometimes it runs fine for days, sometimes it gets this slow every hour, so I don't know how to reproduce the issue.

I tried disabling animations and all extensions, and even reinstalled Ubuntu, but the problem sticks around. Restarting gnome only doesn't help either.
I think my graphics card drivers are installed correctly, because gnome still runs smoothly most of the time. Though I'm not sure how to check that as I'm rather new to Linux.
Of course, I've heard a lot of complaints about gnome before, but I don't think this is normal behaviour that can't be fixed. I also don't really want to change to a new DE or distro now.
Any ideas what could be the cause of this or how to fix it? Any help is much appreciated, I'm getting desperate.
