Gedit very, very slow

I have been using Gedit for programming ever since I have gone over to Linux. In C I now sometimes use arrays of over 3000 integers, sometimes single numbers, sometimes in groups of five. Gedit then grinds to a halt - even writing a few characters can take over thirty seconds. Is this normal behaviour, and if not, is there a solution?
