boot from a raid 5 mdam system

I have been given an old HP Z420 server with 4 SAS disks and its LSI9412-4i card, it's not very powerful (twice the time to build a kernel than my i7-6700 machine) but an interesting machine to play with.
I managed to create a raid system with mdadm and install slackware64-current but I'm not able to boot strait in after:
- "usb stick" doesn't boot
- "elilo" doesn't boot
there's always this message 'unable to mount the system VFS...'
There may be something wrong I did.
I created a first partition vfat-efi to install the bootloader but no luck.
I need some pieces of advice on the smartest way to be able to boot normally that machine with only those 4 disks?
