Boot issues - Ubuntu

Hi all
I'm trying to solve some boot issues with an ubuntu installation on an external SSD. I am wondering if I should do a complete re-wipe, but before I do, just thought I would try to troubleshoot the problem.
So basically sometimes when I boot from the SSD into ubuntu, I get a black screen and I am forced to hard reset my computer.

- Checked in gnome disks - disks are okay
Done a memtest, memory is okay
Checked with smartmontools everything comes up as okay
