UPDATE: Police searching for suspect in unprovoked Waterdown stabbing that sent man to hospital
Hamilton police are asking for the public's help identifying a suspect responsible for a random stabbing in Waterdown Monday night.
Police said at around 9:30 p.m., officers responded to the area of Main Street North and John Street East in Waterdown for reports of a stabbing.
Through their investigation, police said a 47-year-old Waterdown man and his wife had been out walking in the area when an unknown man approached them and stabbed him multiple times without provocation."
Hamilton paramedic Supt. Dave Thompson said the man was transported to a local trauma centre in stable, but serious" condition. Police said the victim's wife was also knocked to the ground during the assault and she suffered minor injuries.
Police believe the suspect was armed with an edged" weapon. After the assault, he fled east on John Street East toward Mill Street North.
The suspect is described as a white male with a darker complexion, approximately 30 years of age, standing five-foot-four with a thin build and a pointy nose. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.
Detectives are asking the public to check their security cameras for suspicious activity. Residents can expect a police presence in the area Tuesday as they canvass surrounding homes for witnesses and surveillance footage.
Anyone who may have information about the suspect's whereabouts is asked to not approach him and to call 911 immediately.
