UPDATE: Male cyclist, 47, dies after being hit by car near Beach Strip
A 47-year-old cyclist was killed after being hit by a car near the city's Beach Strip Monday evening.
Police said a Stoney Creek man was riding his bicycle southbound on Eastport Drive near the Burlington Lift Bridge just before 6:30 p.m. Monday evening.
At that same time, police said a 30-year-old man from Hamilton was also travelling southbound on Eastport Drive in a Honda Accord.
The pair collided, said police. But the circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation."
The 47-year-old cyclist suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the driver is co-operating with the investigation.
In photos from the scene, a severely damaged bicycle can be seen leaning against the curb. Nearby, a tan-coloured car with heavy damage to its front windshield and passenger-side front bumper and light was also at the scene. A single black shoe as well as a black backpack could also be seen on the road.
The Hamilton police collision reconstruction unit has taken over the investigation and detectives have not ruled out speed or impairment as factors of the crash.
Beach Boulevard was closed for a number of hours as investigators were on scene but has since reopened.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the collision reconstruction unit at 905-546-4753 or 905-546-4755.
