Problems booting from CD/DVD

10 YO Gateway (Intel Core i5, 2 large HDs---only one of which seems to be recognized by the Manjaro or Mint "Live CD" installers, configured with Linux Mint---many whiles ago (2018?). Owner / Operator was once capable of installing Linux in his sleep---but now seems to have "lost it all".

I have been struggling to get it to consistently boot from "live DVD"--either a newer version of Mint---or Manjaro.**

The "Boot setup" in the BIOS is ambiguous---specifically, one can select which device is the 1st, 2nd, etc.....OR: the devices are listed in a separate menu, where one can set the priority for each one.**

When I started this process, I successfully booted the Manjaro DVD---ran the install, but then found that I could not boot into the new OS. The best I could get was the original Mint installation***.

The BIOS for this machine recognizes 5 possible boot paths:
--
**The options:
Removable Device
CD, DVD
"EFI Device"
hard drive
LAN

***As part of the Manjaro installation attempt, we shrank the Mint partition and created a new one for Manjaro----but--as stated, the installation did not appear to do anything relevant to setting up a boot loader. (With GOG ("Good 'Ole GRUB"), there was always an option to configure the boot parameters for ANY new install)

So......where to start in unravelling all this? For example, I wonder if there are any sources for documentation of the installed BIOS? (In the various screens, I see "American Megatrends" and "Acer")
