x11/xrandr & intel graphics not providing full resolution for 4k monitor (64-current)

I don't know if I've forgotten how to search documentation, or if I'm too sleep deprived to understand what I'm reading but I can't figure out how to get my (ancient) laptop to respect the resolution of my sparkly new 4k external monitor. Specifics:
laptop: 2011-ish Lenovo Thinkpad E520 with Intel integrated graphics (i915 driver), running Slackware64-current
monitor: AOC CU32V3 LCD monitor with a resolution of 3840x2160 at 60Hz, and dimensions of 697.306 x 392.234 mm.
I typically use X11 (compared with Wayland, it has superior support for my trackpad and other little things), but the KDE display configurator claims the maximum resolution is 1920x1080.
When I experimented with Wayland for this monitor, the KDE display preferences allow me to scale down to 50%, which at a basic level gives me 3840x2160 but with shoddy rendering: it's not giving me true 3840x2160, but 1920x1080 that's been scaled up. This scaling option was not available when using X11, where the minimum scaling amount is 100%.
I'm sure I'm missing something but I can't suss it out. Again, maybe it's the sleep deprivation, but I'm having a very difficult time understanding the xrandr man page and how to apply it.
