MySQL login

Hi all
for the life of me I can not set a root password for MySQL
it automatically lets me in from the command line, its been some time and I've search all over nothing seems to work it just lets me straight in with out been asked for a password from the command line
Using Ubuntu Server 18.04, my MySQL is Server version: 5.7.33-0ubuntu0.18.04.1
any idea's as its driving me nuts
