xerox printer connected to my Ubuntu laptop

Perhaps someone knows if there's a way to get around a security nonsense that just started when I moved to another location. My Xerox color laser printer would turn on with the start page but would not communicate with my computer. I contacted Xerox who wanted to sell me some security patch for $250, which I have no intention of buying. Would anyone have any idea how I can get around this, my plan B is to get a different printer. Its a Phaser 6510.The cartridges are not empty, it's been a very complicated printer since I purchased it, but presently it won't work at all. Any suggestions? You'd be my hero. Thanks
