What is the difference between the processes of full installing to an usb stick and full installing to an usb hard drive ?

Hi!
I am trying to install Linux on an external hard drive for use on a macbook 7.1 2010 (16GB Ram).
I have read that some distros install files relevant for booting on the internal hard disk even when the installer "is told" to install on the external disk and also different theories why this is so. And that these cause problems, one of them being that the external disk has to be plugged in in order for the internal disk to be booted. There also many suggestions as how best to deal with this problem.
While reading in order to prepare myself for this adventure (I don't want to blow my old macbook which has been running very well for almost a year from live usb sticks of Mint,Ubuntu, Manjaro and Slackware Live Mate) I read somewhere a reference to a difference between usb sticks and usb hard drives which If I recall it right should affect the process of installing.
Unfortunately I can't find that text now - I read so many that administering a register of them became difficult.
There are many texts explaining differences between these two types of devices, but I have not find one pointing the differences in the process of doing a full install.
I will appreciate any insight into this question. Thanks for this great forum !
