Slackware to vps, securely

I have a slackware -current device, and I'd like to connect to a VPS Nextcloud instance from public wifi.
Can I create a VPN tunnel perhaps using Wireguard? Put simply, I want the server and the connection to be as secure as possible.
Any advice on such a setup?
