UPDATE: Man killed by falling sign on QEW near Burlington Skyway
A 46-year-old man from Toronto is dead after an overhead road sign collapsed onto the Queen Elizabeth Way, near the Burlington Skyway, hitting his passing vehicle.
Ontario Provincial Police were called to the scene on the Toronto-bound QEW lanes past Nikola Tesla Boulevard around 2:50 a.m. Tuesday, said Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.
It's believed an excavator in a construction zone struck the overhead sign, causing the structure to collapse.
That sign collapsed onto the QEW, striking a passing vehicle," Schmidt said.
The driver was pronounced dead on scene.
OPP have since corrected initial information in a tweet that the man involved in the collision was from Toronto, not Niagara Falls as earlier reported.
Hamilton Paramedic Service sent two transport units and a supervisor to the scene, where they found the man without vitals, Supt. Dave Thompson said.
No one else was hurt, he said.
The highway is expected to remain closed until about 9 a.m. for investigation and sign removal.
More to come.
This article has been updated to correct that the man involved in the collision is from Toronto not Niagara Falls as originally reported by OPP.
