Report: Multiple teams had interest in trading for Watson before legal issues
The Houston Texans initially planned to grant quarterback Deshaun Watson's trade request during draft week, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Before Watson's legal issues, the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, and Washington Football Team had expressed interest in acquiring the three-time Pro Bowler, McClain added.
The Texans wanted to get teams into a bidding war and seek a package consisting of three first-round picks, two second-round selections, and a starter on defense.
Such a deal is now unlikely as Watson faces lawsuits from 22 women accusing him of sexual assault and harassment. Watson's legal team has argued the plaintiffs are lying.
Watson reportedly made a trade request following a 4-12 season in which he threw for a career-high 4,823 yards. The quarterback was also rumored to be frustrated with front-office decisions.
However, since the troubling allegations came flooding in against Watson, many clubs linked to a potential trade have pivoted to other passers. The Panthers have traded for Sam Darnold, Washington signed Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Patriots re-signed Cam Newton, and the Jets and 49ers are expected to use a top-5 draft pick on a quarterback on Thursday.
