[Current] Users cannot unmount NFS volume with fstab "users" option

In Slackware64 14.2, users could be given permission to mount and unmount NFS volumes by including the "user" or "users" option in the relevant entry in /etc/fstab.
Under Slackware64 current, the same /etc/fstab entry allows users to mount the NFS volume (as expected). However, when attempting to unmount such a volume, the system responds:

Based on a small number of similar reports around the web it appears this may be a consequence of having /etc/mtab be a symlink to /proc/mounts. However, no solutions are offered that I can see. This issue only seems to affect NFS volumes: local devices behave correctly with the "users" /etc/fstab option.
Does anyone know of a way to allow users to unmount the NFS volumes they have previously mounted as permitted by the "users" option in the volume's /etc/fstab entry?
