How to keep Min18 updated in future?

Is there maybe some way to be able to keep on manually upgrading the various packages in Mint18?
Like: through Synaptic or "apt-get upgrade all" or somesuch in a root terminal??
I've got the latest stable kernel installed in the M18 instal I've used for years (the kernel is 5.11.17 ATM - even though it seems to take about twice as long to boot up as the last one (5.8.2) used to!) - which has to be an improvement on Mint13 - which wouldn't even accept/run with any kernel later than 4.1 - which is why I had to migrate to M18.
And, having got my M18 instal running just how I like it, I'm keen on keeping it going and updated for a while longer if possible.

I've got a Mint20 instal running OK - and I know how to shift my complete Thunderbird email "profile" across OK with ImportExportTools if I want to - and how to copy my /home/user across - but I much prefer the way Mint18 gives you the option to "Run as administrator" in its rightclick menu - which always works well. In Mint20, even though it shows this rightclick "Run as admin" option, it doesn't ever seem to work. Sure, you can run the command (eg gedit or midnightcommander) from a rootterminal - but it is just that bit more tedious/timeconsuming :-S :-(.
I've just gotten used to being able to edit my grub.cfg etc in a root terminal whenever I want to - eg by running gedit as root.

Or is there some way to overcome this Mint20 annoyance by editing /etc/blahblah (I forget the file name) to "Allow app to run as root = 1"?
I remember having to do something similar to this in Mint18 to be able to get to login to a root desktop/GUI ("Allow root log in = 1" or something like that) - which I know is potentially dangerous - and which I only ever used occasionally. By running eg MidnightCommander as root there isn't really ever the need to log in to a root desktop any longer.latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=cYj5PMP-euA:ZgojpWdE0G0:F7zBnMy latest?i=cYj5PMP-euA:ZgojpWdE0G0:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=cYj5PMP-euA:ZgojpWdE0G0:gIN9vFwcYj5PMP-euA
