XPS13 9300 connecting display to monitor via HDMI

I have a thread under the same Subject in the Hardware forum.
I obtained assistance there but in the end it was recommended I come here, a laptop forum because it would be more suitable having tried every suggestion previously.
I want to connect my laptop to a monitor using an HDMI cable and I thought it would be fairly simple however in my case it is not.
I aim to use the laptop to stream games such as No Man's Sky and use the monitor while the lid of the laptop is closed.
I have tried all of the available settings I can find, together with the video suggestions in the previous forum. However, I am only able to use the laptop in this manner if I mirror its screen.
Can anyone assist please?
