Slackware 14.2 and Firefox updates
by Lufbery from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5J2VC)
Hi all,
I was using Firefox last night (as I usually do in Slackware) when I decided to check the version. It's version 68 ESR and it has an August 2020 date. When I log in, I usually check for updates and apply them when I log in, but just to double check I went to the stable changelog and found out that August 2020 was the last Firefox update.
September 2020 is the last Thunderbird update.
July 2020 is the last Seamonkey update.
My understanding is that the ERS releases have had security updates since mid 2020 and I'm concerned that I have less secure web and e-mail software.
In the past when I have wanted a newer version of those apps than what Slackware's stable distribution offered, I would download the tarballs and untar them to /opt and then point them to the appropriate data directories in my home directory. However, I couldn't update them with slackpkg.
So, what's this community's advice?
Should I drop Patrick a note?
I think it is relatively straightforward to repackage the official binaries into Slackware packages. I think I could help with that effort, but then send them to Patrick?
Seriously, I've been using Slackware since 11.0 came out, but this is the first time I've really been concerned about the software versions we use in the stable release. I appreciate any advice.
