upgrading -- will this fly?

After partially recovering for disastrous "upgrade " Ubuntu 21.04 I like to try this.
I have one working OS on multiboot system - Ubuntu 20.10.
I did copy the entire OS partition to new one - on same HDD.
1, Can I update my working "grub" manually ? I kind forgot how to do it...
2, Can I then run " upgrade" on existing working OS and hope it will find my new OS?
I have observed that sometime "upgrade" does run / update "grub", but I am not sure how it finds out that "grub" update is thing to do at what time.
Then if I can convince "grub" to run my new OS I will hold my breath and try to upgrade from 20.10 to 21.04. Again - I am one of those people whom never learn from past failures ...
BUT this time I will run ONLY ONE HDD !
