Bookmarks disappeared

This is the only Linux forum which I regularly follow, hence my appeal for help is posted here. If there are better places to post this please tell.
Linux Mint 17.2
daniel@Daniel ~ $ firefox --version
Mozilla Firefox 78.7.1esr
This morning my desktop PC booted normally and Firefox launched normally. The Bookmarks menu is still shown at the left edge of the screen. However the Bookmarks Menu folder is empty!
Google turns up plenty of advice most of which I don't understand. I am a recreational programmer and know little of "systems" lingo.
My computer file backup method is primitive. Every two weeks I copy the entire /home/daniel folder to an external drive. The bookmarks have not changed much since the most recent backup was made. Is it possible to copy only the bookmarks from the backup volume? I'd hate to lose any files changed or created since that backup was made.
