A section of Leaside Drive in Welland was shut down Sunday afternoon after a call came in as possible shots fired in the area, said Niagara Regional Police.

Police closed the road south of Woodlawn Road and just north of Silvan Drive.

Three officers were spotted at a side door at 91 Leaside, while two other officers, one with a long gun and one with a shield, were one house away.

Police said they hailed the resident at 91 Leaside Dr. and asked the person to come out and speak with them.

One officer went inside the home to talk with a man, who came outside.

Police said there was no confirmation that a firearm was ever discharged and added it may have been fireworks mistaken for gunshots.

The area was re-opened by 6 p.m.
