The Houston Texans have signed free-agent running back Rex Burkhead.

Burkhead spent the last four seasons with the New England Patriots after playing four with the Cincinnati Bengals. He suffered a season-ending knee injury last November, causing him to miss six games.

The 30-year-old joins a deep backfield in Houston led by David Johnson and recently signed free agents Phillip Lindsay and Mark Ingram.

Burkhead is a do-it-all running back, earning key snaps with New England and helping the club capture Super Bowl LII. He averaged 4.4 yards per carry over the last two campaigns while amassing nine total touchdowns and 52 receptions.

The Texans added a large number of veterans to their offense this spring amid the uncertainty surrounding star quarterback Deshaun Watson's status. Tyrod Taylor, Marcus Cannon, and Chris Conley were among those added to David Culley's squad this offseason.
