How can I hide my URI requests from a snoopy modem?

I have only one decent Internet service provider in my area, and I have to use the modem they provide. The problem is, every time my machine requests some URI, the modem quite ostensibly phones some website in a country whose flag is all red with a bunch of gold stars in one corner, where people can actually go missing for criticizing their government...

I am not a fan of that country and most of its practices.

How can I dodge that?

I thought of blocking that host in my machine or using some middleman solution such as IPFire, but of course that wouldn't work because the modem will still be at the extreme end of the setup and it will still phone its master and quite likely inform what sites I am visiting.

So maybe a private VPN? Would that work? I suppose that would make it look like all my requests go to the one host, thus cloaking the actual hosts my machine is requesting and fooling the modem. But I am not sure that would really work that way and, even if it does, I wonder if the content of the packets will still reveal the actual hosts if the modem is programmed to sniff them.

Then I thought about an SSH tunnel to a private server with squid to fetch the pages and serve them to me over the tunnel. Would that work? What do you elders of the village think?
