English dictionary in an open format?

I'm looking for an open 'explanatory dictionary' in text format parsable by scripts. I've found the Wordnet lexical database. It's available under a BSD-style license, particularly in the 'goldendict format' - a gzipped utf-8 text. But maybe there is something better or more up-to-date (Wordnet is 10yo and missing some new words)? I'm not a native English speaker and would appreciate any advice.
