weird keyboard issue [xfce]

I am using a german keyboard layout.
I assigned this application shortcut:
dead circumflex: xfce4-terminal --drop-down
What happens now is that my "a" key stops working. It just doesnt insert the latter anymore. I can see the cursor blinking when I hit they key though. Using shift the big variant works though.
If you wonder whether this is related, it is. I found another case of it.
Now my question is, can you explain this and would I be able to fix this somehow?
